“I have been painting for about three years and used to go to an art show in San Francisco for six years. Before I became a painter, I was doing colored pencil and ink as well as pop-up. However, my main experience came from when I was a teenager: I would do murals in freeways as well as behind buildings, with spray cans – what we call graffiti art, not tagging.
“I give thanks to Stan Hunter and Ezequiel Gonzalez for helping me become the painter I am, as well as to my family who have been supporting me with becoming who I am now. Not the same person I was when I came in, but a new creation with new values as well as principles and thinking differently, donating paintings to different organizations as well as selling them. I have never sold any painting in prison because I have been busy painting what people out in the streets want as well as donating to different organizations.”

“I have been painting for the past six months and have no prior art experience. I started painting soon after arriving because it looked interesting and something I would like to try to pass time. Although painting was harder than I thought, I continued to learn with a lot of help. After completing my first project, I realized how great it was to create something out of nothing. Something I could leave to my son, family, and friends. Something I created with my own hands. Something I could do the rest of my life.
“Even though I am physically away from the ones I love, having my painting hanging on their wall makes me feel like I am still a part of their lives and not forgotten.”
